Premature Ejaculation

It has been estimated that as many as one-third of all men will experience rapid or premature ejaculation at some point in their lives. [premature ejaculation] Both the male and his partner may experience a great deal of anguish as a result of the condition. There is hardly a single day that goes by in which a man does not come to us seeking assistance in regulating his climax and ejaculation.

There is a lot of subjectivity involved in the concept of premature ejaculation. In its most basic form, the term “premature ejaculation” refers to the situation in which “a guy ejaculates sooner than he intends, and this causes distress to either him or his partner.” To put it another way, if male ejaculates within ten seconds and neither he nor his partner are bothered by it, then there is no need for concern. Some of the guys we work with are under the impression that they have premature ejaculation because they complete the act of urination within 15 or 20 minutes. It is a concern if this leads him or his partner to feel uncomfortable in any way.

The good news is that there are treatments that are successful! Treating the patient as a whole is essential in this regard, just as it is in practically every other facet of sexual medicine. A solution that is both successful and long-lasting can be achieved by taking medicine in conjunction with engaging in behavioral therapy. In many instances, we will offer medicine that will slow down the rate at which the patient ejaculates. At the same time, we start investigating how the male is having sex and how we might change the way he expresses his sexuality to assist him in mastering the ability to control his ejaculatory output. After we have mastered the various therapeutic options, we can then discuss gradually decreasing the dosage of the medicine.

Patients who suffer from premature ejaculation have access to a variety of home treatments that they might attempt. There is a possibility that these will work for some guys; nonetheless, the vast majority of men will require initiating therapy with some kind of medical intervention. We have found that the use of drugs helps men find success more rapidly and puts an end to the negative spiral that they were in. When we are no longer considered to be in an “acute stage” of treatment, we then go on to therapy.

Investigating the factors that lie under the surface is an essential component of any therapy plan. In many cases involving guys, we find that there is an underlying anxiety condition. Anxiety is a common factor that contributes to premature ejaculation. The act of ejaculating is reflex of the lower spinal cord and its controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. The part of our nervous system that causes us to feel twitchy, skittish, nervous, or jumpy is called the sympathetic nervous system. The feeling of anxiety is an essential component of the neurological system. It’s possible that the anxiety is momentary, like when you’re about to engage in sexual activity, or it could be more generic and be negatively impacting your life in general.
