Fissure and fistula are two common conditions that can affect the anal region. Although they may sound similar, they are two different conditions with distinct causes, symptoms, and treatments. In this blog post, we will discuss fissures and fistulas, including their causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Moreover, these diseases may cause male issues.
What is a fissure?
An anal fissure is a small tear or cut in the lining of the anus. It is a common condition that effects both men and women, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including constipation, diarrhea, anal trauma, childbirth, and anal sex. Fissures are typically painful and can cause bleeding during bowel movements.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a fissure include:
- Pain during bowel movements
- Bleeding during bowel movements
- Itching or burning around the anus
- A small tear or cut in the skin around the anus
- A small lump or bump near the anus
Treatment
Treatment for a fissure typically involves managing the underlying cause of the fissure, such as treating constipation or diarrhea. Over-the-counter creams and ointments may also help to soothe the area and promote healing. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the fissure.
What is a fistula?
A fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the anus or rectum and the skin around the anus. It is usually the result of an infection in the anal glands, which can cause an abscess to form. When the abscess bursts, it can create a tunnel between the anus, or rectum, and the skin. Fistulas can be painful and can cause discharge from the anus.
Symptoms of a fistula include:
- Pain around the anus or rectum
- A small bump or lump near the anus or rectum
- Discharge from the anus
- A feeling of fullness in the rectum
Treatment
Treatment for a fistula typically involves draining the abscess and closing the fistula. This can be done through a small incision in the skin around the anus or through a procedure called a fistulotomy, which involves cutting open the fistula and removing the infected tissue. In some cases, a fistula may require more extensive surgery to repair. But this treatment is not a full cure, because after a period of some months, the same may appear again.
