Beneficial Nutritional Supplements for Male Fertility

Beneficial Nutritional Supplements for Male Fertility

September 26,2023 by Dr Samreen Asad

There is a lot of scientific evidence to suggest that some dietary supplements might help guys get pregnant. In a recent Cochrane review, it was found that antioxidants raised the number of pregnancies and births and made sperm move better in men who were not fertile.

The vitamins C and E

Vitamins C and E are important antioxidants that stop oxidative stress and free radicals from damaging the body’s cells. Vitamin C is one of the most common antioxidants in the sperm of healthy men. It helps keep sperm healthy by protecting the DNA from damage caused by free radicals.

Vitamin E is a vitamin that dissolves in fat and helps keep the cell membrane of sperm from getting damaged. Studies have shown that vitamin E makes it easier for sperm to move. Vitamin E is made by vitamin C, so these two vitamins may work together to make sperm work better. Vitamin C has been shown to improve the number, movement, and shape of sperm. When guys with low fertility rates took vitamin E supplements for three months, their fertility rates got a lot better. When guys with infertility took vitamin E, the number of pregnancies they had went up.

The vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a number of important roles in the body, such as controlling the immune system, making muscles work better, and possibly protecting against a number of health problems. Vitamin D is important for sperm development and testosterone levels in men. A recent study found that men with normal amounts of vitamin D had more mobile sperm than men with low levels of vitamin D.

The element selenium

Selenium is a trace chemical that helps protect cells from damage. Selenium supplements have been shown to improve the movement of sperm, and a mixture of selenium and vitamin E has been shown to reduce damage from free radicals and improve the movement of sperm in men who are unable to have children.

Lycopene

Lycopene is a strong antioxidant and a carotenoid, which is a type of plant colour. Tomatoes have a lot of lycopene. This phytonutrient is found in high amounts in the testes, and studies have shown that giving men who were unable to have children lycopene improved their sperm parameters.

The amino acid L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is a byproduct of amino acids that the body makes. It moves fat so it can be broken down into energy. L-carnitine is also thought to be a good antioxidant. The main benefit of L-carnitine is that it gives sperm energy, which makes them move faster.

Zinc

Zinc is an important element that helps make sperm, break down testosterone, and move cells around. Testosterone levels, the number of sperm, and how well they move have all been shown to go up when you take zinc supplements.

Vitamin B9

Folic acid is a type of B vitamin that is needed to make DNA. Low amounts of folic acid have been linked to a lower number of sperm and to sperm that don’t move as well. In a recent study, taking zinc and folic acid together led to a 75% rise in the number of normal sperm in men who were not fertile.

How to Choose a Nutrition Supplement

On the internet and elsewhere, you can buy a number of combination items that claim to make men more fertile. But because the government doesn’t watch over the dietary supplement business, there are big worries about how pure and accurate the products are. It’s best to choose a supplement that has been approved by DRAP as having the correct ingredients and being pure. In particular, because it is very hard to standardise the content and purity of plant extracts, herbal supplements should be looked at carefully, and you should probably avoid them if they haven’t been independently confirmed.
